Joshua's House gives homeless people in Sacramento County a place to die with dignity

For people experiencing homelessness, dying alone on the streets can be a devastating reality.Dr. Marlene von Friedricks-Fitzwater knows this issue all too well. After interviewing about 180 people experiencing homelessness about their greatest fears, she heard a common concern. Joshua's House, a hospice facility in Sacramento, provides free end-of-life care for homeless people. The facility was inspired by Dr. Marlene von Friedricks-Fitzwater's grandson, Joshua, who died while experiencing homelessness in Omaha, Nebraska. von Friedrick-Fritzwater believes people deserve a home where they can be loved and cared for at the end of their lives. Joshua's House provides food, personal care, and other comforts for those who otherwise might spend their final days in hospitals or on the streets. Curtis Burdan, who has a terminal illness and congestive heart failure, has found peace in living in a comfortable environment at Joshua's house. Adi Rasilau, the program manager at Joshua’s House, said the work combines two passions: helping marginalized people and providing end-to-life treatment.
