Coastal flooding creates fire risk for electric vehicles

The Laguna Beach Fire Department has warned that saltwater exposure can create a fire risk in the lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, hybrids, e-bikes and scooters following last week's flooding. The department stated that these batteries can damage and potentially cause fires days or weeks after exposure. If the vehicle is not functioning normally, it should be professionally towed or inspected by a certified mechanic. If it emits smoke, hissing or popping sounds, or unusual heat, the department advises against attempting to extinguish the fire. Lithium-ion battery fires burn intensely and require up to 60 times as much water to extinguise as fires involving gas-powered vehicles.
