California senator shows up unannounced at an ICE holding center. What he found
The senator toured the Sacramento center without notice, two days after an ICE agent’s vehicle was involved in a collision with an observer in the region. California U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla made a surprise visit to a federal immigration holding center in Sacramento, California, to inspect conditions and seek answers about a collision involving an ICE agent and an observer. The unannounced inspection was part of Padilla's fourth visit to an immigration holding facility by the senator, a critic of the Trump administration's immigration policies and the tactics of ICE agents. The visit came amid a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations across California and the Sacramento region. Four people were being held at the center after Padilla was escorted alone to the center, which was closed off from the public for a half-hour.
