Newsom Commutes Sacramento County Men's Sentences

Three convicted killers from Sacramento County just got a shot at parole. Newsom cites rehabilitation records in a 57-person clemency sweep. California Governor Gavin Newsom has reduced the sentences of four Sacramento County men convicted in shootings, three of which were fatal, to 25 years to life. The commutations were part of a broader clemency announcement covering 57 people statewide. The governor granted 27 pardons and 30 sentence commutations, citing years of education, vocational training and prison work programs as the basis for the decisions. Among the commutations was that of Gerald Ellis, who was 24 years old during a 2005 home-invasion robbery in which his crime partner shot and killed a person, and now works as a peer support specialist. Other notable commutations included that of Ronald Prasad, who received a 60-year sentence reduced to 60 years to live, making him eligible for earlier parole consideration subject to applicable review periods.
