State lawmaker receives thousands in unclaimed money, reminds others to check
Billions of dollars sit unclaimed in California, waiting for residents to claim it State Assemblymember Miguel Santiago received over $10,000 in unclaimed money from the State Controller's office. Santiago had been trying to claim the money for a couple of years and reached out to claim it. The controller's office has an estimated $13 billion of unclaimed property in California. Billions of dollars sit unclaimed in California, waiting for residents to claim it. Some of that money belonged to a state lawmaker.On Tuesday, State Assemblymember Miguel Santiago was presented with a check for more than $10,000.Santiago said he's been working to get the money for a couple of years, and the State Controller's office made it happen."It was actually my retirement money from some time ago," Santiago said. "I found out when I was just checking in on it."Santiago reached out to the controller's office to claim the money."Ended up calling the controller's office and said, 'Hey, I need help,'" he said.Santiago is far from the only Californian that had money sitting unclaimed."The controller's office has $13 billion that we're holding and we want to get it all out to everyone," said California State Controller Malia Cohen.
