California senator shows up unannounced at an ICE holding center. What he found
The senator toured the Sacramento center without notice, two days after an ICE agent’s vehicle was involved in a collision with an observer in the region. California U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla made a surprise visit to a federal immigration holding center in Sacramento, California, to inspect conditions and seek answers about a collision involving an ICE agent and an observer. The senator, a fierce critic of the Trump administration's immigration policies and the tactics of ICE agents, was forcibly removed from the scene after confronting then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a June 2025 news conference. This visit comes amid a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations across California and the Sacramento region, with the latest incident being in Woodland where an ICE vehicle collided with an observer during an operation. As many as 12 people can be held in the facility at any given time.
