West Sacramento Families Afraid to Leave Home Amid ICE Fears
A West Sacramento mom of four says she’s too afraid of ICE to take her kids to school or the grocery store. Fear over immigration enforcement is causing some Latino families in West Sacramento to fear their families may be separated without warning, according to one mother and founder of the Latino Information Resource Center in West Sac. The fear is not confined to one neighborhood, but is spreading throughout the region, with Maria Grijalva assisting at least 20 parents connected to River Banks Elementary School who feel they are not receiving adequate support. The Woodland Joint Unified School District stated that immigration enforcement officers are not allowed on school campuses without a warrant, citing federal guidelines that designate schools as sensitive locations. The district also stated that it does not collect or share information about students' immigration status and will not allow immigration enforcement activities on its campuses without proper legal documentation and prior district approval.
