Zero-emission truck, van and bus sales doubled in California from 2022 to 2023

One in six new trucks, vans and buses purchased in California in the last year met the state’s zero emissions standards, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday. California's governor, Gavin Newsom, announced that one in six new trucks, vans and buses purchased in the last year met the state’s zero emissions standards. This milestone was announced as part of a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions in the state. About 16% of heavy- and medium-duty vehicles from the 2023 model year sold in California are zero-emission, according to data from the California Air Resources Board. The milestone represents a doubling in the sales of zero emission trucks, buses, and vans from 2022 to 2023. Newsom has been promoting zero emission vehicle sales as key to his climate goals, including a 2020 executive order to ban sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035, which will require a shift towards consumers buying electric vehicles.

SACRAMENTO — One in six new trucks, vans and buses purchased in California in the last year met the state’s zero emissions standards, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday.

About 16% of heavy- and medium-duty vehicles from the 2023 model year sold in California are zero-emission, according to data from the California Air Resources Board. That metric includes big rigs, buses, delivery vans and trucks.

Newsom announced the milestone as much of California experiences a heat wave. He pointed to the 12 consecutive months of global heat records as evidence California and the rest of the world need to dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

Newsom characterized the zero-emission truck milestone as important for the state’s economy, too. Newsom and other state leaders have for years sought to bolster California’s electric vehicle industry as American car manufacturers face stiff competition from Chinese automakers. That dynamic was on display last fall when Newsom traveled to China and toured a manufacturing plant for the American automaker Tesla in Shanghai and an electric bus charging depot that featured vehicles made by the Chinese company BYD.

“This is not just about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this is about economic might, economic competitiveness,” Newsom said on a call with reporters Thursday. “We want to dominate in this space.”

The 16% figure represents a doubling in the sales of zero-emission trucks, buses and vans from 2022 to 2023. Newsom has been aggressively promoting data on zero-emission vehicle sales, which are central to his climate goals. In 2020, he signed an executive order to ban sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035, which will require a major shift toward California consumers buying electric vehicles.

Newsom noted widespread adoption of zero-emission vehicles will require the state to convince skeptical consumers that electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles can be reliable and affordable. He said the oil industry, which is consistently a top lobbying force at the California Capitol, stands to benefit from that skepticism. But he also acknowledged that automakers need to bring the prices of zero-emission vehicles down and the state needs to continue to build more charging stations, issues where he said there’s been significant progress in recent years.
