Sacramento's 86-Year-Old Driver Sets Bonneville Speed Records

He's 86 and closing in on 400 mph. Meet Sacramento's Bonneville speed demon. Sacramento driver Gary Matranga, 86, set two speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah this summer, driving a modified 1966 Barracuda in which he raised his gas-division record by 17 mph to 308 mph and reached 310 mph in the fuel division, surpassing a fuel-division mark of 305 mph that had stood for eight years. Now, Matragna and his crew are aiming for a run at 400 mph in a rocket-shaped streamliner, a car built with its wheels lying on its side rather than standing upright. The car's twin-turbocharged Hemi engine is powered by over 2,400 horsepower and the team believes engine tweaks could increase the car's speed to 340 mph. The team plans to spend the winter testing the Barracud's engine for more power, while working nights and weekends around members' day jobs. Matrang's target of 400 mph would put him in rare company: Danny Thompson's Ferguson streamliner took the lead at Speed Week 2026 and the Strasburg/Wolf Blown Fuel Lakester hit 382.528 mph.
