Educate or enforce? Sacramento City Council e-bike proposal makes holistic shift
A Sacramento committee heard public feedback on a proposal to increase e-bike regulations. “This is not simply an enforcement issue.” The Sacramento City Council is considering a proposal to increase stricter enforcement of rules for e-bikes and other electric alternate modes of transportation. The proposal, submitted by Councilmember Karina Talamantes, aims to increase "enforcement and penalties for illegal use" of e-motos, e-scooters and e-vehicles. The city has seen an increase in the use of these modes of transport and in hospitalizations in the past few years, according to a report requested by the California Legislature. The discussion on enforcement quickly shifted to include education, infrastructure and the involvement of other vehicles in e-bike crashes. However, two residents opposed the proposal, with some stipulations.
