Man sentenced for 2023 deadly stabbing at light rail station in Rancho Cordova

Prosecutors said the West Sacramento man killed was not involved in the fight at the light rail station. A Sacramento Superior Court judge sentenced Roderick Earl Sowells, 60, to 31 years to life in prison for the murder of David Marcus Jones, 29, at a Rancho Cordova light rail station in 2023. Sowell was convicted in May of second-degree murder with an enhancement for using a deadly weapon and had a prior sexual assault conviction that counted as a strike under California’s “three strikes” law. The stabbing occurred during a dispute between Sowelled and Jones’ friend, who threw a glass bottle at Sowels during a fight, causing Sowelling to stab Jones 18 times. Jones died several weeks later from his injuries.
